Title: Comparison between Advanced Practice Nursing and Two APNs

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the practices of two advanced practice nurse (APNs), in different specialty areas. APNs were both a PCNP and CNM. Interviews were conducted in person. Data from interviews was then analyzed to identify similarities and differences. It was found that APNs choose their specialties according to their own interests. Both work in different environments, which has an effect on their daily lives. There was a wide range of levels of satisfaction between APNs regarding their roles in the healthcare system. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners certified the PCNP, and the American College of Nurse-Midwives gave the CNM a certification. While the CNM had no prescriptive power, the PCNP was able to prescribe controlled substances according to schedules II-V. APNs were in a different relationship to physicians. While the PCNP had a supervision agreement, the CNM had a collaboration agreement. Both APNs had been credentialed, privileged and were both members of APN-related professional groups. It was also revealed that the views of both APNs on Doctor of Nursing Practice were different. While the PCNP had a positive opinion, the CNM held mixed opinions.

Introduction: Advanced Practice Nursing is a specialty that demands specialized skills and knowledge in the practice of nursing. APNs are able to provide care for patients in a variety of settings and have been widely acknowledged as an answer to the problem of primary care providers. The purpose of this paper is to examine the practice and qualifications of APNs. One being a PCNP, the other being CNM. This study aims to show the differences and similarities between these APNs as well as how certifications and their daily practices impact their practice.

Methodology: Interviews with two APNs took place in person. The PCNP was selected based on the criteria provided, and the CNM was chosen based on the researcher’s choice. The structured questionnaire was used for the interviews. All responses were recorded and analyzed.

Findings:

  1. Reason for Choosing their Specific APN Specialty: The PCNP chose their specialty based on their interest in providing primary care services to patients, while the CNM chose their specialty based on their passion for women’s health and childbirth.
  2. Description of setting and typical day: The PCNP was employed in a private primary healthcare practice. They saw patients every other day for their routine checks-ups and managed chronic conditions. CNMs work in hospitals. Their typical days include attending prenatal appointments, handling births and consulting with obstetricians.
  3. High level of Satisfaction With Role and System Although satisfied with their roles, the CNM expressed concerns regarding the system in which they were working.
  4. Type of APN Certification
