Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice

Discussion: Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice

In order to provide quality care for patients, it’s essential that nurses use evidence-based practice. This discussion will examine your clinical experiences to assess whether the care provided was supported by evidence. You will also formulate a PICOT question. You will also identify and suggest strategies for overcoming any barriers to the adoption of evidence-based practice in your clinic.

It is crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of EBP during a clinical encounter. My recent clinical experience involved the care of a COPD patient. I used evidence-based care and consulted with research to provide care. I used an incentive spirometer to help the patient maintain adequate oxygen saturation levels, provided education on smoking cessation, and administered albuterol via a nebulizer to relieve the patient’s breathing difficulty. The evidence supports these interventions and they have been proven to increase patient outcomes.

Here are the background questions I have and my PICOT question regarding COPD.

Background questions

  • Which are the risks of developing COPD?
  • Which are the best smoking cessation methods for COPD patients?
  • What can patients who have COPD learn to improve their outcomes?

PICOT question

My organization’s policies, procedures and culture may either support or hinder the adoption of evidence-based practice. One example is that some employees may resist changes and prefer to keep using the same practices than to adopt new evidence-based methods. Implementing EBP may also be hindered if there are not enough resources, funding, or time.

In my company, one barrier is the inability to implement evidence-based practice. I see this as a lack of resources and time for staff to access and analyze research results. These strategies will help me overcome that barrier:

  • To review and apply evidence-based practices, create a multidisciplinary team, which includes researchers and staff.
  • To make it easy for researchers to find research findings fast and efficiently, create a protocol.
  • Staff should be trained on the best ways to evaluate and use research results in their work.

The use of evidence-based practices is crucial for providing high quality patient care. Nurses can enhance patient outcomes by identifying the barriers and identifying them.

Course Project: Part 1—Identifying a Researchable Problem

The course’s first part will require you to identify and create a PICOT query that addresses a specific nursing problem. A list of keywords will be created that can be used to conduct a literature review to find relevant research.

My nursing problem or issue is the high number of medication mistakes in my clinic environment. It is important to note that medication errors could lead to patient harm and higher healthcare costs.

To address the problem, I generated five questions:

  1. Careful consideration should be given to the possible causes of errors when administering medication in a hospital setting.
  2. Which interventions were implemented to decrease medication errors?
  3. Is technology possible to help prevent errors in medication?
  4. Is medication error a factor in healthcare outcomes or costs?
  5. Is there a way to make medication errors less frequent through staff training?

After analyzing the feasibility of these questions, the most appropriate question is “What interventions have been implemented to reduce medication errors?” This question is feasible because it is specific, measurable, and has a clear focus.
