Newsletter Respiratory System

Our Respiratory System newsletter will discuss the structure, function and most serious diseases of the system. Many organs make up the respiratory system, such as the nose, throat, larynx and trachea. They work together to provide oxygen and carbon dioxide to the body.

The nasal passageway is the main entry point for air into the respiratory tract. Air travels through the larynx and pharynx before reaching the bronchi. The respiratory system serves two purposes: to supply oxygen to the body and eliminate carbon dioxide (a byproduct of metabolism).

Asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive lung disease), pneumonia, as well as lung cancer are some of the most common respiratory illnesses. COPD refers to a progressive lung condition that causes airflow limitations and chronic inflammation. While pneumonia, which is caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi, is a serious infection of the lungs, it is not a fatal disease. Lung cancer, a type of malignant tumor that develops in the lung and spreads to the rest of the body is called “lung cancer”.

A pulmonary function test (PFT) is the most commonly used laboratory or diagnostic test to diagnose respiratory conditions. It measures how much air the lungs can hold and how fast air is moving in and out. Spirometry can be used for COPD to determine airflow limitations. A chest Xray can diagnose lung cancer and pneumonia.

Pulmonologists, nurses, and respiratory therapists are the main providers of health care for the respiratory section. Pulmonologists, who are specialists in diagnosing and treating respiratory conditions, provide care for patients at hospitals and clinics as well as in their homes. Respiratory therapists offer respiratory therapy to those in need of it. As part of respiratory care, nurses play an important role, supporting pulmonologists as well as respiratory therapists in providing patient care and education.

The vital respiratory system provides oxygen for the body as well as carbon dioxide removal. There are many diseases that can impact the respiratory system including COPD, lung cancer, asthma and COPD. The most common diagnostic and laboratory tests for respiratory disease are PFTs. The main providers of health care in the respiratory section are nurses, respiratory therapists and pulmonologists. They provide patient care, education and support for patients suffering from respiratory disease.
