Adolescents aged 12-18 are most at risk, particularly those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or have lower socioeconomic standing. These age groups are at greater risk from hormones, lifestyle and other factors that can lead to imbalances, as well as lack of proper healthcare.
Racial inequalities can also play a role as youth from certain backgrounds are more susceptible to experiencing discrimination and inadequate resources, depending on their location. This health problem may be associated with cultural stigmas that could make it difficult for people to seek help, even when they are eligible. It is crucial that policy makers and health professionals both consider cultural stigmas when dealing with this issue. This will ensure everyone benefits equally.
