Anatomy of the respiratory system is made up organs and structures that aid breathing. The respiratory system consists of five major components: the nasal, mouth, throat, windpipe (trachea), windpipe (pharynx), throat (pharynx), bronchioles and lungs. Air enters the trachea through the mouth or nose. The air then travels through the bronchioles and branches to reach alveoli, small sacs that exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide.

The system also includes ventilation which describes air movement within and outside the lungs, diffusion which shows how oxygen is transported across cells membranes so that it can be used by cells, and respiration which deals with all cell activities related to oxygen use in tissues. Various muscles, including the ones located within the chest wall, are also involved in controlling inhalation movements and exhalation.
