Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the disease I chose. MS is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin sheaths that cover nerve cells. It can lead to a range of symptoms depending upon the affected area of your nervous system. Common symptoms are fatigue, visual loss, cognitive dysfunction and muscle spasms.

MS affects several different body systems. The central nervous system is the most affected. It can cause inflammation and damage to myelin and nerves within the brain and spine. CNS dysfunction can result in communication difficulties between the various parts of your body.

MS affects neurological function as well as other bodily systems, such digestion and circulation. Due to the slow movement of the stomach through MS patients, constipation and nausea can be common. This is due to impaired nerve signals between the CNS and muscles that are necessary to normal digestion. Reduced blood flow can cause muscle weakness due to damaged myelin or scar tissue within vessels that are near MS-related lesions.
