The research article selected for this post is “Experiences of Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment in Assisted Living: A Systematic Review” by Dabelko-Schoeny, Anderson, and Rubinstein (2020). This study was designed to examine the experiences of seniors with cognitive impairment who live in assisted living homes. The systematic review of relevant articles was done to determine which studies were pertinent. An extensive search strategy was then used to locate all publications published between 2008-2018. This study included 23 articles which met all the criteria. The data were then analyzed by thematic analysis.

This study used systematic reviews as a sampling technique. These are rigorous, comprehensive approaches to finding, appraising and synthesizing relevant research on a topic. Systematic reviews seek to minimise bias and enhance the generalizability by using clear and transparent methods to find, select and analyze the studies. The sampling technique used in this study ensured that the relevant studies were included, which increased the validity and internal integrity of the results.

Polit and Beck (1921) state that systematic reviews have been deemed the best method of evidence synthesis. They use transparent and consistent methods to identify, appraise, and synthesize all pertinent studies. Systematic reviews use a thorough search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria and a generalization approach to reduce bias and improve the generalizability. The sampling technique used in this study ensured that relevant studies were included, which increased the validity and internal integrity of the results.

Three key questions I’d ask when reading the research report are:

  1. Which criteria were used to select studies for inclusion or exclusion in the systematic review? It is crucial to answer this question as it will help determine the quality of each study included in the systematic review.
  2. Which themes emerged from data analysis? It is essential to answer this question as it gives insight into older people with cognitive impairment who live in assisted living homes.
  3. Which policy implications will these findings have for practice and policy. It is crucial to ask this question because it allows us to see areas that can be improved in our care of seniors with cognitive impairment living in assisted living homes.

If you are responding to peer questions, there may be other questions or answers related to your studies that might also apply.

  • Which sample was used? What were the composition and size of each individual and is this representative of the entire population in question?
  • How might the limitations and strengths of the sample method have affected the results?
  • What were the effects of sampling biases on study design and analysis?
