Introduction Hyperlipidemia can be a serious condition. It affects many people and can cause severe complications like cardiovascular disease. Over the years, much of the research on this topic has focused on its management. This article critique examines a recent article about hyperlipidemia management. It was published in the past three to five year.
Summary of the Article The article, titled “New Lipid Guidelines for Hyperlipidemia Management: A Practical Review,” was published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2018. Summary of the Article The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force On Clinical Practice Guidelines released 2017 lipid guidelines. This article summarizes these key changes. These guidelines focus on risk assessment as well as statins being used to lower lipids. In managing hyperlipidemia, they also stress the importance of lifestyle modification, including diet and exercise.
Target Audience This article is intended for healthcare professionals who are involved in managing hyperlipidemia. These include doctors, nurses, and any other health care providers involved in hyperlipidemia management.
A contribution to Current Knowledge This article summarizes 2017’s lipid guidelines and contributes to our current knowledge about the management of hyperlipidemia. These guidelines are a change in emphasis from focusing on specific cholesterol levels, to considering the overall risk of cardiovascular disease and using statins for primary treatment. Lifestyle modifications are also important in managing hyperlipidemia.
Future Research Directions. The article is not intended to suggest future research directions related to hyperlipidemia management. It does however suggest that further research is needed to understand the effects of new lipid guidelines and clinical outcomes.
